Zach Wormhoudt, 37, Santa Cruz
Stature:
5-10, 154 pounds
Maverick’s results: Eighth place in 1999, fifth place in 2000, fourth place in 2005
Occupation: Skatepark designer and engineer
Sponsors: Balance Vector, Hotline Wetsuits, Stretch Surfboards, Pacific Wave Surf Shop, Converse.
Maverick’s experience: Wormhoudt’s peers growing up included future big wave standouts like Josh Loya, Daryl and Troy Virostko, Peter Mel, and Ken Collins. He and his brother Jake were part of the original crew of Santa Cruz surfers to tackle Mav’s in the early 90s.
Notable: Growing up on the Westside of Santa Cruz, Wormhoudt’s surfing was influenced by some of the most accomplished big-wave riders in the world. Big wave icons such as Vince Collier, Richard and Dave Schmidt, Bud Miller, Charlie Heitmen, Tom Powers taught Wormhoudt about what it takes to succeed in huge waves. As a Santa Cruz Junior Lifeguard and a volunteer with the Santa Cruz Volunteer Marine Rescue Service, Wormhoudt learned to be comfortable in heavy water and high pressure situations. He mostly surfs with his brother, Jake, who is on the alternate list for this year’s contest. They have both developed a reputation for being on just about every notable big swell to hit Maverick’s in the last 12 years. This commitment to Maverick’s paid off in 2004, literally, when Zach won the Billabong XXL award for the biggest paddle-in wave of the year and took home $10,000. When the tow-surfing revolution took place, the Wormhoudt brothers naturally decided to team up. Last year the brothers won the inaugural Nelscott Reef Tow-in Contest beating a talented field of some of the top tow-in teams in the world.
