Notable: Smith took third after slipping into the contest as an alternate in 2005. The next year he took second in the epic conditions. He is right up there with Desmond for the distinction of the top goofyfooter out at Maverick’s. In two short years, Smith has solidified himself as one of the favorites in this event. He is unequivocal about his goals for his surf career: to win at Maverick’s and to ride the biggest wave ever ridden.
