Shawn Rhodes, 38, Pacifica
Stature:
5-11, 170
Occupation: Owner of NorCal surf shop in Pacifica, shaper for Neptune surfboards
Maverick’s experience: Along with Matt Ambrose, Rhodes has been surfing Maverick’s since the early 90s
Notable: Rhodes is probably best known as the owner of NorCal surfshop in Pacifica. However, when he’s not busy making the Pacifica groms clean his shop windows and stack bars of wax, Rhodes is probably ripping one of the beachbreaks around Pacifica. And if there is a big swell running, don’t bother looking for him in the shop, as he will most likely be sitting deep waiting for a bomb to come through out at Maverick’s. As one of the best all-around surfers to come out of Pacifica, it was only natural that Rhodes was attracted to Maverick’s when word first spread about the monster wave. Since then he has established himself as one of the best locals out there and has been invited to every contest ever held at Mav’s. Rhodes helped develop fellow Pacifica charger Matt Ambrose’s skills by taking him on trips to surf big waves in the outer islands before they knew about Mav’s. Rhodes is an old-school waterman in the mold of Jeff Clark: one of the few Maverick’s surfers who shapes his own guns and then can paddle out and take off in the pit. Rhodes is an 8 year shaping veteran and Ambrose has caught many a Mav’s bomb on his Neptune surfboards. In the last five years, the two have invested in a jet ski and have managed to be on it, with tow boards ready, any time Maverick’s hits 30-feet plus and jet assisted takeoffs are the only option.
