Shane Desmond, 36, Santa Cruz
Maverick’s results: Fifth in 2005
Occupation: Bartender, pro surfer. When he’s not pulling into bombs up north you’ll find him tending bar at the Palomar downtown, where he makes a mean margarita.
Maverick’s experience: Desmond has been surfing Maverick’s since the mid 1990s.
Notable: This Santa Cruz midtowner is arguably the best goofyfooter out at Maverick’s on any given day (although fellow Santa Cruzans Mike Brummet and Tyler Smith would definitely contend that). Desmond won the Monster Energy Big Wave Paddle In award for the 2005 season after dropping into possibly the biggest backside wave ever surfed by conventional means at Maverick’s during the 2005 contest. The wave was estimated at 48 feet on the face and earned Desmond one of only two perfect 10s scored in the contest, as well as a $10,000 check from Billabong. Desmond is also an avid tow-surfer and took second at the Nelscott Reef Tow-in contest in Oregon last year with his partner Tyler Fox. Desmond is a confident guy. Not only is he brave enough to surf Maverick’s backside, but even more impressively, he isn’t afraid to regularly be seen surfing in his trademark fully hooded neon green O’Neill wetsuit.
