Stature: 6-6, 190 Maverick’s results: Advanced to the semifinals in the last three contests, finishing 12th, ninth and seventh, respectively. In ’06, he finished just one point shy of making the final heat. Maverick’s experience: Seelbach got into surfing relatively late, but his size and athletic background have helped him rise to the top out at Mav’s in a fairly short time. He’s been surfing the place with the best of them for the past five years, and has competed on the main stage since 2005. Notable: In the 2006 contest, Seelbach earned the heaviest wipeout of the contest award after coming detached from his board and going airborn deep in the pit. He then took a seven-wave set on the head while waiting for water patrol to come bail him out of the rocks. It turned out to be an encore for his death-defying act the previous year when he ate it on a mutant set wave, got washed through the lagoon, and lost his board to the rocks. Somehow he still managed to advance to the next heat and also qualified for hellman status in everyone’s book. Seelbach broke his foot this December while tow-in surfing giant Maverick’s. He is hoping the contest is called near the end of the waiting period and he will be healthy to compete..
