Maverick’s results: Semifinalist in 2006. Occupation: Pro surfer Maverick’s experience: Smith took some beatings in his first two years in the event, getting worked in the cauldron after not making air drops. Smith, however, has been resilient out at Maverick’s, and it paid off in the 2006 event when he managed to make it to the semifinals and compete in the same heat with his brother. He didn’t wind up making it to the final, but that’s just more fuel for this year.
Notable: Russel and Tyler Smith have been pushing each other into larger waves every winter, culminating in the last few years as they have gained global exposure for their tow-in assaults at both Maverick’s and the heaving 30-foot slabs of Ghost Trees off of Carmel. While his brother is a goofyfoot, Russell rides frontside out at Mav’s.
