Randy Cone, 43, Pacifica
Maverick’s results: Semi-finalist in 2006.
Occupation: Surfboard shaper
Maverick’s experience: Cone began surfing Maverick’s in 1998, and quickly became enraptured with the wave, moving to Northern California from the relatively tame, orderly pointbreaks of Santa Barbara in order to be as close as possible to the action.
Notable: A journeyman shaper with over 25 years experience, Cone has made boards all over California and lived and shaped on the North Shore of Oahu as well. Since making the move north, he has dedicated himself to perfecting the art of shaping big-wave boards for the cold, powerful reefs of Northern California, earning a solid reputation among the cadre of NorCal big-wave riders. Cone has shaped boards for such Maverick’s standouts as Grant Washburn, Doc Renneker, Ryan Seelbach, Rodrigo Resende, and Alex Martins. Cone received some long overdue notoriety for his shaping prowess last year when South African Grant Baker won the Maverick’s contest on the now legendary green Maverick’s gun shaped by Cone. Cone shaped the green board significantly shorter than most of the big-wave boards out in the lineup that day and Baker proved that the lack of length wasn’t a liability by making multiple drops deep in the peak for 10 point rides.
