Mav’s experience: Ambrose represents one of the original members of the ad hoc crew of surfers from the Pacifica/San Francisco area that began tackling Maverick’s under the tutelage of Jeff Clark in the early 90s. At 35 years old, and with over a decade and a half of experience surfing the wave year-in-and-year-out, Ambrose is one of the most highly-respected locals in the Maverick’s lineup.
Notable: Although relatively unknown outside of Northern California, Ambrose has earned, with the exception of two-time champion Flea, the most consistent results of anyone over the course of the contest’s five-year history. Ambrose finally received some long-overdue recognition in 2005 when he won the Jay Moriarty Award for the most inspiring performance of the contest. He doesn’t get anywhere near the level of hype and publicity as the higher profile guys with six-figure sponsorship deals, but ask any grom that regularly surfs along the coast between Pacifica and Half Moon Bay, and they’ll tell you, Matt Ambrose is a living legend.
