Kenny “Skindog” Collins, 37, Santa Cruz
Stature:
6-0, 175
Occupation: Volcom sales rep, pro surfer
Maverick’s results: Tied for ninth in 2000
Mavs experience: Skinny was a relatively late bloomer out at Maverick’s. Many of his Santa Cruz brethren were charging the place since the early 90s. However, once he eventually made the drive up to Pillar Point and paddled out one winter day in ‘96, Skinny was hooked and quickly ascended to the top of the Maverick’s ranks, reaching the semifinals in the 2000 contest. Since then, Skinny has also been at the vanguard of the tow-in revolution. His partnership with Peter Mel produced one of the most historic moments in tow-in surfing on October 28, 1999, a session generally regarded as the first true demonstration of what tow-surfers were capable of at Mav’s. The session demonstrated the world of possibilities of tow-in surfing at Maverick’s and established the two as the best tow-in team in the world outside of Hawaii. In 40- to 50-foot faces, the pair were documented leaning into radical bottom turns, carving 40-yard cutbacks into the pit, and soul arching deep inside some of the biggest barrels ever seen on the west coast.
