Notable: Most folks in Northern California don’t know too much about Whittle. In South Africa, however, the man is a legend. Whittle is a perennial invitee to the Red Bull Big Wave contest in his homeland and will compete at Maverick’s for the first time this year. A die-hard waterman, Whittle dives, paddleboards, and surfs huge waves. He hails from Cape Town, which means the cold-water shark pit known as Dungeons is in his backyard. He is a strict paddle-in purist and refuses to consider towing, even when many of his fellow riders are willing to set down their 10-foot rhino chasers and take up the tow rope. Whittle won the 2006 Red Bull Big Wave South Africa Contest over a cast of all-stars and is looking to do the same at Maverick’s.
