Notable: Closed out Waimea Bay, monster North Shore Outer reefs, Heaving coldwater slabs in Chile and tow-ins at the biggest beachbreak in the world, Puerto Escondido. “Sterlz,” as he is known on the North Shore, now brings his round-the-world big wave act to Northern California, and makes his Maverick’s debut. One of the most accomplished backside surfers out at Waimea, Sterling hopes his success will translate to the bowl at Maverick’s, another right, albeit a much colder, rockier right. Sterling has made the invitee list of the prestigious Eddie Aikau big wave event the past three years and his resume is impressive: fourth place at the Red Bull Big Wave Africa 2006, Billabong XXL Awards Best Overall Performance of the winter ’06, 12th place in the Eddie Aikau 2004-05, 10th place in 2002 Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau, fourth place 2003 Hansens Pipeline Pro, Sixth place in the Red Bull BWA 2003. Unfortunately, Maverick’s doesn’t care about resumes.
