Banner is the epitome of a soul surfer, a true waterman who enjoys putting himself in the most critical situations in the ocean simply for the personal challenge. He regularly shuns the spotlight and it makes little difference to him whether the photographers and video crews are out in the channel or not. Banner is often seen bobbing way outside on huge days by himself at the lonely beachbreaks and outer reefs along the stretch of coast between San Francisco and Half Moon Bay. His myth only grew when, after the 1999 contest, he inexplicably disappeared and was nowhere to be found amidst the gaggle of reveling surfers enjoying the afterparty at the Half Moon Bay Brewery. He finished 10th in the ‘99 contest and 11th in ‘00, sticking ridiculous drops in each that delighted the locals, including one of the biggest air drops ever seen during the 2000 contest. His absence at last year’s contest angered many HMB locals, prompting one boat out in the channel during the event to hoist a large sign protesting the lack of an invite.
