Grant Washburn, 38, San Francisco
Stature: 6-5, 220
Maverick’s results: Semifinalist 2000, sixth place 2004, fifth place 2006.
Occupation: Film producer
Sponsors: Jeff Clark Surfboards, Kingpin, RC, Xcel, Reactor, H2O.
Maverick’s experience: Behind Jeff Clark, many associate Washburn as the face of Maverick’s. He has maintained an intimate relationship with the wave since first surfing it in the early 90s, helping produce numerous documentary films and books on the wave, it’s history, and the surfers committed to the spot. Year-in-and-year-out, probably no one surfs Maverick’s more often than Washburn.
Notable: One of the original pioneers of the wave after Clark first went public with it. Physically, Washburn is the by far the largest and most powerful surfer out at Maverick’s, providing him with a distinct advantage. The Mav’s crew often jokes that Washburn’s arms are like oars, and it’s true that Washburn can probably generate 10 to 15 percent more paddling speed than most surfers in the lineup. Grant consistently catches some of the biggest waves of the winter every year out at Maverick’s. A regular invitee to the Red Bull Big Wave Africa contest as well, Grant has taken home the biggest wave of the event award three separate times: in 2000, 2002, and 2005.
