Only Washburn and Cone, his Maverick’s mentor and big-wave shaper respectively, had a true notion of what he was capable of. This year nobody will be mistaken about Baker, the defending champion. Baker’s success in 2006 really shouldn’t have come as a surprise. Hailing from South Africa, Baker sufted often at the deepwater wave known as Dungeons, a wave that is frighteningly similar to Maverick’s in both its deep water power and the surrounding environment (i.e. freezing cold water, jagged rocks, and a nearby seal rookery that regularly attracts toothy predators). Baker shocked the entire field when he took home the winner’s trophy at the biggest, cleanest waves ever seen at a Maverick’s surf contest. A darkhorse no more, everyone will be shooting for Baker this time around and it will be interesting to see how he deals with the pressure of trying to prove that his win was no fluke.
