Garrett McNamara, 39, North Shore, Oahu
Stature: 5-10, 180
Maverick’s results: First appearance in a Mavericks event
Occupation: Pro surfer
Maverick’s experience: Most of his experience out at Maverick’s has come in the last few years behind a jet ski. He began towing the place two winters ago and has already put in one impressive paddle performance there this winter.
Notable: This is the first invite to the Maverick’s contest for the Hawaiian hellman who has risen to the forefront of the tow-in revolution, most recently winning the Nelscott Reef Tow-in Contest. McNamara, along with Brock Little, is one of the few Hawaiian big-wave riders who hasn’t been complacent with the outer reefs of Hawaii and has committed himself to traveling to cold water waves such as Maverick’s, Dungeons and the recently discovered Shark Park in the Channel Islands McNamara is the current World Champion of Tow-In Surfing, taking first place in the Inaugural $70,000 World Cup of Tow-In Surfing, which was held in 60-foot surf on January 8th 2002 at Jaws. The World Cup saw the largest waves ever for a contest and offered the largest purse ever.
