The First Annual Roxy Women's Paddleboard Challenge will take place in conjunction with the 2007 Jay Moriarity Memorial Paddleboard Race Saturday. Roxy is offering a prize purse of $500, which will be divided by the top two finishers in the 12-mile long course and the 2-mile short course.
The challenge is part of an initiative to increase women's participation in the sport, said race co-director Gunnar Roll.
"We really want more women to participate," said Roll. "We know there are a lot of women out there who have the skill and endurance and strength to paddleboard because there are plenty of women surfers. We really feel that women are underrepresented in the sport of paddleboarding"

- SURFTECH BOARD GIVEAWAY: People who join the Surfrider Foundation on Thursday, International Surfing Day, will be given an opportunity to enter to win a free surfboard, according to Santa Cruz Surfrider spokeswoman Kelly Vander Kaay.
The local chapter of the Surfrider Foundation will hold its International Surfing Day beach cleanup event from 7-11 a.m. Thursday at Steamer Lane, in conjunction with Surftech, an event sponsor. Surftech will also hold a board demo, and the organizations will have tables and information available.
International Surfing Day, created by Surfing magazine, is an "unofficial, official surfers' holiday" meant to promote and celebrate surfing while raising awareness about the state of the oceans and beaches.
Duke Brouwer of Surftech will be at the event taking photos to submit to Surfing magazine. The winners of the board giveaway will be published in the magazine, said Vander Kaay. For information, visit www.surfingthemag.com.
- ASHLEY AT BOCCI'S: Local pro surfer and singer/songwriter Ashley Lloyd will play at about 8 p.m. Monday at Bocci's Cellar, 140 Encinal Street Santa Cruz.
- IT WAS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME: Verizon Wireless now has a new waterproof cell phone out called the G'zOne Type S. The phone can be immersed in shallow water for up to half an hour. It also is shock- and dust-resistant. Don't expect obnoxious businessmen to be spinning deals with corporate while paddling into the lineup, however [whew] — it's not meant to be surfed with. It's OK to get it wet, but subjecting it to waves is another thing. We'll see how long that lasts. Reporter Katherine Nichols at the Honolulu Star-Bulletin tested it in the ocean off Kaimana Beach a few months ago.
